Beta Pi Blog, Vol.2007, No.41 - WAZ, unplugged

Beta Pi:

A little blues here, dedicated to WAZ:

On my way down to New Orleans - Clarksdale, Mississippi /

I was cruisin’ in the Delta land, (Somewhere between Memphis and Tunica) /

I called the one-and-only WAZ-man! He’s the man you remember

Went schwimmin’ widdis fish in his hand!

As I was driving, I was doing an "unsafe" thing - scrolling my Blackberry while driving. Hey, it’s the Delta, what can I say. Anyway, I scroll upon the name "Charles Weiss" a.k.a. Chad Weiss, cweiss@jogcapital.com better know as WAZ. I had the great good fortune to connect . . .

WAZ - unplugged:

Chad is cheerful and grateful - like most of us - a changed man, having children. WAZ is decidedly more cheerful in this conversation - which was nice (my memories of WAZ are mostly: WAZ, the schwimmer who barely had time to do anything except schwim and study, thus WAZ-man was somewhat irritable, as the schwim-baggio’s could be, but I digress). Chad is in the oil and energy business, and in the midst of putting his kids to college. There is a chance that a WAZ-offspring may attend Vanderbilt, Chad said Vanderbilt is on the short list, but his daughter (I think he said daughter) is not yet decided. As to his possible attendance at the big ‘09 Reunion, WAZ-man said he’s going to wait and see who decides to show. I take that as a yes. He also agreed to get me some info on George Wellborn. Chad, great to reconnect with you my brother, and I hope to see you soon.

MATT BLANKENSHIP - update:

On the same cruise, I also made a phone connection with Matt Blankenship mattsb@texas.net . Matt and I are fellow guitar enthusiasts (having spent many hours together at Vanderbilt playing guitars). Matt’s son Matt, III, has a band and plays guitar (I can identify because my son, Andrew has a band and plays bass) so we talked music at length. I tried to talk Matt down from his previous vow - "See you at our ‘50th Reunion" (which will be in 2025)- I said "Matt, you’re an optimist, planning to live long enough to attend our 50th".  Matt and I are both 54, and if we make it, we’ll be 72 years old! (I am hearing the Neil Young song "Old Man" in my head). I’m lobbying Matt heavily to attend our 35th in 2010. Matt, in true style, is keeping his options open. Matt, I love you, old friend.

BETA PI BLOG ROSTER REPORT: The Tick-a-lor Blog roster is now 83 Beta Pi brothers, 69 of whom have e-mail addresses. A verse is appropriate:

It is your solemn duty as Tick-a-lors

Hey Chad-
You are still a WUUSS ( I think this spelling is more representative of what the nickname stood for!).

FROM JACK MUENCH, July 9, 2007:

"I am certain that the nickname was "Waz"."

TO MUENCHIE:  yes, I recall it.  Woos may have been a sub-nick-name.

FROM MARK McGANN, July 9, 2007:

"Actually I believe Chad, venerable pledge master of the class of '73, was known as Wazz ( undoubtedly a ribald play on his surname) and (Dr.?)Mike Glover was known as Wuss (as in Pussy).  I don't know who or what a Woos is.  Next time try pulling over, you'll live longer."

TO MARLON:  Yes, you're probably right - that's 2, I'll revise it.

ADDITIONAL NOTE FROM JACK MUENCH:

"Who's the babe? I ask that respectfully in case she's your wife or sister or something."

RESPONSE TO MUENCHIE:

"There is a contest at Issue 25 (See Archives):

"CONTEST: be the first Tick-a-lor to "Name this Babe" - and win dinner for 2 at Rotiers, at your next Reunion"

FROM MATT BALANKENSHIP, July 9, 2007:

"Larry et al,

Good to talk to you my friend.  Here's a plug for our kid's tunes,
which, as I listen to Andrew's jazz as I write this, are really good.
Check out Andrew's music at www.myspace.com/groundspeak and my son
Matthew's music at www.myspace.com/psnevermind.  How is it that they are
so much more talented than their dads?  It just ain't fair!

Matt"

TO MATT:  I think I'm going to get a presence on MySpace, it looks cool.  I'll check out Matthew's music.

ISSUE #25 CONTEST ENTRY FROM JACK MUENCH:

"If this a recent picture of Laura, and she is Vinny's uncomplicated love-slave, I shall truly curse the fates!"

SORRY, MUENCHMAN, NOT CORRECT.

NOTE TO CHAD WIESS, July 9, 2007:

"WAZ,

SORRY FOR MIXING UP NICKNAMES.  THERE'S A MAJOR DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A "WAZ" AND A "WUS" - AGAIN, SORRY.

BOZO"

FROM TISON KEEL, July 10, 2007:

"Larry:
I think Chad is properly nicknamed Woz (rhymes with cause) as opposed to Woos (rhymes with puss), which was the former President of Beta Pi, Mike Glover.
Nice to talk with you last weekend, friend!
