Beta Pi Blog, Vol.2010, No,10 - Strong Arm Tactics

Beta Pi:
IS BETA PI BLOG WITHOUT ANY REDEEMING SOCIAL OR ARTISTIC MERIT?:

YEA . . . . or

NAY?

Beta Pi Blog exists for one reason: to bring ATO, Beta Pi Chapter Brothers together. The blog does not take itself very seriously - it is meant for fun, and therefore is non-political. It includes

pictures, links, Archives of previous issues, and other time-wasters. To get there, go to web address: http://beta-pi-blog.blogspot.com .

STRONG ARM TACTICS: This story caught my attention.

This actual news story was on the internet:

Forensic testing of more than 80 Roman-era skeletons unearthed in York, England, indicates that the athletic young men with well-developed right arms had been gladiators. Some of the bodies had been decapitated and had received hammer blows to the head. One of the bones also showed evidence of a bite from a large carnivore, such as a lion, tiger, or bear. “We don’t have any other potential gladiator cemeteries with this level of preservation anywhere else in the world,” said a noted archeologist.

So, MARLON, you see where this is going, right? You’ve got 80 ancient gladiators, all with super strong right arms. Evidence of hammer blows to the head, one with carnivore bite wounds. Gladiators, but no explanation offered for all of them having super strong right arms. An archeological mystery?

Not for Beta Pi Blog. One need simply consult the annals. Tick-a-lor history is replete with evidence of young men with well-developed right arms. No mystery. Excessive, (some might say compulsive) repetitive motion with the right arm (and hand) - let’s see. For a fact, there is one Tick-a-lor who was literally named for this phenomenon: none-other-than

The Mighty . . . ROD . . . YANKER!

That is not some fake name, like Pete N. Espanz,

Willie Stroker,

or Matt Starbader, Colonel Lingus, or even Phil A. Cheerio.

No Sir, Rodney Yanker, Class of 1980 is a real person, and ATO is honored to have him!

And, there were several guys before Rod’s time (Class of 80), most notably the Shwimbags,

Lee Hall,

Marlon,

M-Link, and of course

The Mighty

Lurch,

whose right-arm strength was matched by none. HAAA! Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

REUNION / HOMECOMING UPDATE: For those of you who have not been to Reunion. It’s simple.

Friday Night - Class Party. Saturday Afternoon - Tailgate & Homecoming Game. Saturday Evening - the 4th Annual ATO Dinner, 7:30 p.m., at Cabana. After that, Roam-Campus-Parties-till-you-drop.

Cabana was such a big hit

last year (good food, good drink, Tales accommodated) - we have already booked Cabana as the Official ATO Dinner Venue.

One answer: will you commit to this program? This is not a drill, soldier . . .

Consider that J.D. - still to this day - lives with his Mother, and refuses to get a computer or e-mail, or otherwise join the 21st Century. Commitment can be a scary thing, for a guy with chronic Peter Pan Syndrome.

It is scary, I know, and crying towels are available in the lobby - it has been 35 years.

Here are the brave souls who have committed, thus far . . .

ANDREW SIMONS’ WEDDING: This past weekend, my son

Andrew Simons married Lindsey Looft! The wedding and reception were wonderful. I am feeling mixed emotions - which I expressed to Andrew - joy at his wedding, and sadness that he is moving away to Denver. Milestones.

ONE THING LEADS TO ANOTHER. Well, at the Wedding Reception - small world, a really nice coincidence - one of my ex-wife Genevieve’s friends is married to a Tick-a-lor from Class of 1980,

TIMOTHY L. STAFFORD, a.k.a., Tiny Tim - part of

Rod Yanker’s posse.

Tim tim.stafford@vanderbilt.edu  - owing to the sanctity of the Wedding Reception - wisely chose not to launch into any of the many sordid tales of Rod Yanker.

BETA PI BLOG WELCOMES BROTHER TIM STAFFORD!

BECKY BRUNING MANYAK FINDS KAREN DEGERBERG!

Recently, I got a really nice e-mail from Becky Bruning Manyak:

Larry- Your blog always leaves me laughing! I've really enjoyed the pics of the Tics from this past reunion. Buck gets my vote as the guy I would still recognize on the street... Anyway, I'm trying to get commitments from Becky Denham, Karen Degerberg, Katie Herrington, Betty Ingle and Ellen Wright to attend our 35th in October. I'd give anything to see some of you play a Wales Tales game again!!!

A few days later, true to form, Becky notified me that she had persuaded that Celestial Beauty,

Karen Degerberg to join the Blog. It is now my distinct honor to welcome to the Beta-Pi-Blog-o-sphere, to that wacky gaggle of gals know as the ATO Girlfriends-o-yore, the great KAREN DEGERBERG karen.degerberg@gmail.com . We love you, Karen!!

A BRIEF PRIMER ON THE HISTORY OF ATO GIRLFRIENDS-O-YORE. The Beta Pi Blog began in July, 2006, and has grown steadily. After we kicked it off,

Matt Hart had the idea to include women. This idea was very popular, yet it was not until July, 2008, that we were successful in enlisting the first female inductee, my former girlfriend . . .

SALLY TUCKER (See Archives, Beta Pi Blog, Vol.2008, No.32, Tick-a-lo Wimens in History, July, 2008)

After that, some of the All-Time-Great Gal-Pals of ATO came forth, including . . .

RENA DABNE SARTAIN, PENELOPE MALONE &

my beautiful wife ANN POLK (See Archives, Beta Pi Blog, Vol.2008, No.48 - G-F-O-Y Prize winner announced September, 2008)

In short, history has bestowed on us some of the world’s most beautiful women - and we are glad.
