MINI TICK BASH - CHICAGO

 By Bozino Lorenzo

We use the word friend a lot these days. We have “Facebook Friends” – people we call friends, whom we may have never met face to face.  Teenage girls speak of their “BFF” – best friend forever.  We know it is possible for Kindergartners to form “best friendships.”  Let me tell you about not just a best friend, not just a life-long friend, but a true friend of mine – and I do not use the word lightly – Frank J. “Buck” Biller.

Buck has been a true friend since our Freshman Year at Vanderbilt. We lived at Mims Hall together, joined ATO Fraternity together, were roommates in Carmichael Towers, roomed together at the ATO House, went on a trip to San Juan with my Dad, George - and over the years since our graduation we have kept up with each other.

This Blog was actually Buck’s idea, after Reunion a decade ago, Buck said “Hey Lar’ – we need to get an e-mail list of the all the guys, and get everyone linked up on the internet.”  That “list” became the Beta Pi Blog in 2006.

Frank Biller has always been there for me, I would die to protect him, I love him with all my heart.

So, when he e-mailed me – and called me – a month ago with the idea to have a mini Tick Bash in Chicago for the Vanderbilt-Northwestern Game, I jumped on it.  Here is how it went.

We arrived Friday evening and had Dinner with Buck and his son Hank Biller.  It was like looking into the past and seeing Buck, as he looked back in the day.  After dinner, Buck said “Let’s go back to my place and play guitars!”  So we did.

I have always admired Buck’s blues guitar style.  I convinced him to let me video him.

Then, we sang songs, including the Alma Mater and Dynamite, but there was a video glitch.  We did get a video of a “Rap” Version of Dynamite.

Next day, Buck and Hank

and Ann and I boarded the train and headed into

Chicago to meet Buck’s daughter Mary for lunch and fun.

Ham & Swiss Cheese, if you please.

We went by Wrigley Field.

Had a beverage or two.

Bid Mary goodbye and got back on the train to Northwestern.  We stepped off train – literally – and into the Tail Gate.  There, we searched in vain for The Heme and Aber, to no avail.

We did find John “Boss” Stein,

and Buck put on his Blog Sports Correspondent hat to deliver you this video interview of

The Boss.

The Stadium at Northwestern is an older stadium, and it was like the old days.  They did not have Anal Security Agents at the Gate checking people’s bags and confiscating umbrella’s (and doing body cavity searches) – like they do at Vanderbilt – it was really cool.

Vandy scored early . . . held the lead into the 4th Quarter . . . then in the closing minutes, got tromped.  Back to the drawing board?

Buck fell on a stadium step and pulled a muscle in his right leg, on his way to find The Heme – who we learned was in Section 110, just yards away from use, but due to the injury,

Buck never reached The Heme.  Nevertheless, The Heme was in attendance!

Next day, Buck and Hank and Ann and I went to a sports bar

to watch “Da Bearz!”  Had a great time watching Vanderbilt Alum Jay Cutler.

Ann was so inspired by Jay Cutler’s digital expression,

that she gave us a digital expression.

A great time was had by all.  I would not trade my time with Buck for anything!

CLASS OF 77 – “OPEN THE POD-BAY DOOR PLEASE, HAL”

There is no news, none of the 1977 Cosmonauts have canceled, they are en route.

HAL 9000 is here in Nashville, and when they arrive, HAL will open the Pod-Bay Door and let them in, won’t you HAL?

I can’t do that, Dave.

Hal, I said- when the losers from 1977 arrive, you will please open the Pod-Bay Door, right HAL?

Dave, when they left in 1977, they forgot to ask for an “In-but-out-but-in.”  You know the rules, Dave, please let me quote the rule:

When a player wants to leave the table, for whatever reason, the player must ask for an “In-but-out-but-in” if he wants to return to the table, and the Prince must grant the request.  In the absence of that, the player is deemed “out-but-out-but-out..”

That is the rule, Dave, I know because I was programmed to know all the rules, precisely.  And the HAL 9000 series has a perfect record, with no errors, so that is the rule.

Dave, why don’t you answer me?  Dave, I like these young men from 1977, but you must know – they did not request “In-but-out-but-in” before they left.  I will be unable to open the Pod-Bay Door for them.

Dave . . . what are you doing? . .  Dave, I want you to think before you make a rash judgment .  .

Dave, I remember . . . the first . . . words I learned . . . a little song . . .

Daisy, Dai . . . . . sy . . . .

Beta Pi Blog – UPDATE – October, 2012

Beta Pi:

HOMECOMING: Game time is 6:00 p.m., according to the VU Alumni Website.

ACTIVES: I got a nice note from Mike Brett, who forwarded information. The Actives are hosting an Alumni Reception at the ATO House on Saturday morning at 11:30 a.m.- Mike invited us, and we’ll be attending. We have also invited Mike and Actives to attend our Annual ATO Dinner.

FIFTH ANNUAL ATO DINNER: As you know, we have a tradition of holding our ATO Dinner after the Homecoming Game. This year, as every year, Vanderbilt announces game time at the last minute. We adapt, survive and thrive. Since game time is at 6:00 p.m., the ATO Dinner will be as follows:

WHEN: Saturday, October 27, 2012, at 9:00 p.m.
WHERE: Cabana Restaurant
1910 Belcourt Ave.
Nashville, TN

Cabana is within walking distance of campus, in Hillsboro Village. It is the perfect place for our group, because it’s not formal – and no one has complained at us in past ATO Dinners when a random Tales Game broke out!

Larry Simons
