Beta Pi Blog, Vol.2008, No. 42 - Marty Heflin finds John Hartong, '81

Beta Pi:

IS "BETA PI BLOG" JUNK E-MAIL?: Yes, and no! It is not this e-mail. This e-mail contains some written content of the "Beta Pi Blog", not the entire content. The "blog" is a web-site, it includes pictures, links, Archives of previous issues, and other time-wasters. To get there, simply "Click on" the web address: http://journals.aol.com/lasimons4law/beta-pi-blog/ .

That old Neil Young song comes to mind "I’ve been searchin’ for a heart of gold . . ." The Gold Miner, Marty Heflin m@m2hgroup.com has only been on the blog for 2 days - and he has produced results - unlike the infamous Smitty (a visitor to the Tick House when Buck and I roomed in the middle room). Buck Biller once said of Smitty "what consumes but does not produce? Smitty!" I’ll leave it to Buck to tell that tale.

So, today I get this note from Marty-H:

"Larry,

I stay in close contact with Class of 81 Tickster, John Hartong, whose e-mail is attached. John is in contact with a couple of others...I believe! I think most of my class went into the witness protection program.

VTL,

Marty

So, without further "to-do" . . . let me introduce to you, an act you’ve known for all these years . . .

BETA PI BLOG WELCOMES JOHN HARTONG, ATO ‘81:   According to Heflin, John Hartong john.hartong@isdn.net is a "Tickster."  Gentlemen, Tickster is the 1980 translation  of  "Tick-a-lo" -   and we welcome this brother into the internet blog-os-fold.

Blog staff must rely on hold-over Steven B. Starr a.k.a. Vinny starr2456@comcast.net , a post-graduate who haunted the Tick-a-lo Mansion during Vanderbilt Law School from 1975 - 1978, to provide some tale-telling.

According to Heflin, Vinny Starr sat as Judicial Officer-in-Chief, Star Chamber, which grilled and filleted the plebes of the Class of 1980 and 1981, including such greats as Rod Yanker rodney@aamglobal.com . I imagine that Hartong (rhymes with car-bong) must have been grilled at Star Chamber to a state of well-done by Judge Starr.

Beta Pi Blog, Vol.2008, No. 41 - New Blood, Welcome Marty Heflin ATO '80

The internet has uses - somehow Marty Heflin m@m2hgroup.com found me, and sent a message . . .

NEW BLOOD, WELCOME MARTY HEFLIN, ATO ‘80: Although I graduated in 1975, my dear friend Steve Starr, a.k.a. Vinny starr2456@comcast.net stayed on at Vanderbilt Law School, and through him I got to know some of the greats who entered Vanderbilt ATO in 1976, and 1977, and 1978. Such fellows as Rodney Yanker rodney@aamglobal.com and Kurt Wagner. Today, I was contacted by Marty Heflin, ATO Class of 1980.  Here is some of the correspondence:

TO MARTY HEFLIN:

Marty:
I am ATO Class of "75. Did you know my friend Steve Starr, a.k.a. Vinny? Or My friend Rod Yanker?

Larry

FROM MARTY HEFLIN:

Small world! As I recall, Vinny ran my Star Chamber when I pledged...Rod was Chapter President my Senior year. Good guys, both. Saw Rod at reunion a few years ago, but haven't seen Vinny since graduation. Did you know Kurt Wagner...I think he would have been '78?

Best,

Marty

TO MARTY HEFLIN:

Marty:

I did know Kurt, and Wags. I heard Kurt died.

Larry

FROM MARTY HEFLIN:

Oh no! Last contact I had was about 15 years ago - he was working for Bose up in Boston.

Very sad.

Marty"

So, without further reckoning, BETA PI BLOG WELCOMES MARTY HEFLIN - new blood, and the roster goes up a notch. May I suggest that Vinny - who must have heaped mightily on Marty in Star Chamber - correspond with this wayfaring brother!

Beta Pi Blog, Vol.2008, No. 40 - George was an OSS Spy!

You guys might remember my Dad George Simons as the wacky guy who attempted to play Wales Tales at "Columbia Tales" and became the well. Herb Ladley smelled the presence of a well, and continually kept hitting on George. The more he got nailed, the funnier he thought it was. Those of you who knew George know he could hold a lot of beer and liquor. Well, now you know - that Columbia Tales game had been infiltrated by a spy . . .

TRUE STORY: GEORGE WAS AN OSS SPY: In the newspaper yesterday was an article, "World War II Spy Ring was 24,000 Strong." The article is about the OSS - The Office of Strategic Services, an early version of the CIA created in World War II. As I read the article (See Link, at right) I remembered my Dad, George H. Simons told me he had served as a Lieutenant in the Army Air Corp, and was "undercover" working for the OSS, as a "spy." I could hardly believe it, but my Mom corroborated that he was an undercover guy. She had told me he used to have a shoulder-holster hand gun. All I had were stories, until I read the article. It said the List of people who served in the OSS was being released.

I went online to the National Archives website, and searched the Series Record Group 226, Record of OSS personnel, and you can imagine how excited I was - my Dad’s name showed up on the list. No kidding! I have written to National Archive requesting the record.

Let me tell you one of my favorite stories about my Dad. Using his connections to the federal government, he once got us in to meet Richard Nixon. True story - it was summer of 1968, we were vacationing in Key Biscayne. My Dad was a Nixon fan, and it was no coincidence we were staying at a hotel across the street from the hotel where Candidate Nixon was staying. It was a day or two before the Republican Convention, just days before Nixon would become the Republican Nominee.

So my Dad walks in our hotel room and says "Get dressed, we’re going over to meet Nixon." I was 15 years old, and if you’re a parent you know how 15 year-olds respond to everything - "Dad - you are such an idiot!" That describes my attitude, and I said "No way Dad, you’ll never get close to Nixon." He said "Get in the car, we’re going over to meet Nixon."

We all piled in the station wagon and drove across the street, and as we drove up the hotel driveway and near the hotel, I couldn’t believe it - Pat Nixon came walking out, came right up to our car, and my Dad got out and shook her hand. I expected her to yell for help from the Secret Service - but instead she was standing there, chatting with him, smiling. Then, George got back in our car and informed us we’d been invited inside to meet Richard Nixon! I was in a state of disbelief. It was surreal - we walked in, past guys in blazers, and went in to Nixon’s private cocktail party, and George got to have drinks with Nixon, then we all got photographed with him. I got to shake his hand and talk with him.

Afterward, I asked my Dad how he did it - how he got us in to meet Nixon. He told me he ran into a Secret Service Man, someone he knew in the OSS, and used his connection to get us in. Before that, I thought my Dad might be exaggerating about being an undercover agent. After he got us in to meet Nixon, I believed.

Beta Pi Blog, Vol. 2008, No.39 - The Heme Takes Command!

Beta Pi:

IS "BETA PI BLOG" JUNK E-MAIL?: Yes, and no! It is not this e-mail. This e-mail contains some written content of the "Beta Pi Blog", not the entire content. THE HEME TAKES COMMAND: The Heme has stepped up to be "point-man" for the Tick-a-lo’s-O-73! Heme is planning an "All-Tick-a-lo Dinner" Saturday evening, October 25th, at Rumba, a fashionable West End Restaurant. Heme, in an abundance of caution, I went ahead and made a reservation at Rumba for 24, and they are loose if more show up.

* FROM THE HEME:

"Larry:

I think Rumba, 7 pm is perfect. The invitation is extended to ALL Tic’s (and you know who you are), NOT necessarily from the class of ’73. Please pass the word and we need an approximate head-count for the reservation. (i.e.; If we say 20 and 28 show up, no problem, but 45 might be a problem.)

Please let Larry know if you can make it. How’m I doin?

George Tomlinson"

* FROM GEORGE "ABER" ABERNATHY:

"Heme, place an order for 2 more spots for me and Kimberly. Let's Rumba! Thanks"

* FROM JOHN "BOSS" STEIN: "I am in, total of two. jfs"

NON-OFFICIAL CONTINGENT TO REUNION GROWS - MARTY AND LOVE-MAN TO ATTEND! Reunion ‘08 will not be limited to Class-o-73 and Class-o-78 - I got word today that Immortal Marty, a.k.a. Frank Collins, ‘76 will be attending.

And The Love-Man, a.k.a. Tom Lovinggood, ‘74, and myself Bozino Lorenzo, ‘75 will be in attendance. And of course, what Reunion would be complete without a J.D. sighting?

HUGE GORILLA POPULATION FOUND IN CONGO! This is an amazing story - one that I thought M-LINK, a.k.a. George Ford would find interesting (See Link at right). Apparently, there is a massive throng-o-kong! Link, no monkeying around here, we love you - among Tick-a-lo’s, you will always be King (Kong).

SUNFLOWER BLUES FESTIVAL UPDATE: Ann and I are headed to Sunflower tomorrow! I’m ready fo’ big fun. My step-son William (age 19) is going with 5 of his buds - yeah. They are bringing their sleeping bags to camp out in our apartment guest room. The Festival line-up includes Lil’ Howlin’ Wolf, Jimbo Mathis, Super Chikan, Jimmy Burns, and Shemekia Copeland (See link on the right). Yow-za-bay-bay!
