Many of you may remember Shipwreck, the year Sha Na Na played Vanderbilt, and the Sha Na Na sax man came to Shipwreck after the concert. To investigate this further, your Beta Pi Blog reporter has sent an e-mail directly to the Official Sha Na Na website (click on the link on this page). Here is the e-mail:
"Dear Sha Na Na:
I was a Vanderbilt student from 1971 to 1975, and I remember Sha Na Na came to play a date at Vanderbilt. It was so cool, after the Concert, one of the Sha Na Na guys - a saxaphone guy who was ultra cool - came to my fraternity party. It was the famed ATO Shipwreck Party, in which we built a pool in our basement, with a slide down the stairs, and college kids would get drunk on PGA punch and "slide" down the stairs to the pool.
What was so cool that particular Shipwreck was this Sha Na Na sax man actually attended our party. He was sitting on the planter, above the pool slide, blowing awesome saxaphone blues while all these drunken partiers slid down the slide.
It was, in my humble opinion, only the all-time greatest college party in the history of Rock n' Roll, that’s all. And the Sha Na Na sax man made the scene cool - in the extreme!
Here's are my 2 questions:
Do any of you guys remember the Vanderbilt gig (around 1973) or the ATO Shipwreck Party?
Who was the saxaphone player?
I am still in touch with most of my ATO fraternity brothers, who remain interested in Sha Na Na. I will let them know I'm trying to reach you with these questions.
Thanks for the memories.
Sha Na Na Fan forever,
Larry Simons"

It is a shot in the dark, but who knows, Sha Na Na might just respond. It’s a good story, even if we never get a response. I will keep you posted.

E-MAIL FROM MARK McGANN, NOVEMBER 14, 2006:
"The definition of serendipity: The event in question predates me but Scott Shepard and I did party with Denny Greene (the black guy in Sha-Na-Na) in the 80s on at least two occasions. Once was at some charity ball in Sharon, CT where Ken Howard, he of the TV series The White Shadow, etc. fame was also in attendance. Another time at some Sons of the American Revolution event at Fraunces Tavern in NYC. Somewhere I have Denny’s business card with his personal number on the back (not that that would still be good). Before writing this I couldn’t remember if his surname was spelled with two or three Es so I searched "Denny Green Sha Na Na" and at No. 5 under The Lama Workshop – Kansas City Jammers there was a partial description that read "Denny Green of Sha-Na-Na was a classmate and buddy of mine at Hotchkiss. ..." and then it hit me, didn’t Schmeat go to Hotchkiss and wasn’t it rumored that he returned there to teach?? So I went to the Hotchkiss website but no dice under the teacher directory for William Whalen and you need a password to access the alumni directory. So, MR. Simons, your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to email alumnet@hotchkiss.org. and find Schmeat if you are so inclined (unless he isn’t already available through the Vandy directory). Good luck."
UPDATE ON SEARCH FOR SCHMEAT, Phd.:
November 15, 2006. As requested by Mark McGann, I investigated the Schmeat case by contacting "Hotchkiss" - and learned it is a school where Schmeat, Phd. works. I received the following e-mail from a nice lady who apparently works with Schmeat, Phd.:
"Dear Mr. Simons,
I have forwarded your email to Dr. Whalen, as it is our policy not to share contact information outside of the Hotchkiss community. I have asked him to respond to you directly, so I hope you do touch base soon. Please feel free to contact me directly any time if I can be of further assistance.
Regards from Lakeville,
Ellen
