So, out of the blue, just when inspiration seemed illusive . . . Buck sends me an excellent piece he has written about our culture of nicknames.  And, you’ll see after you read it why it is a perfect vehicle for the latest  . . . BETA PI BLOG CONTEST . . . but first, here is what Buck sent me . .

NICKNAMES

By Frank J. Biller

At the insistence of our friend from New York "everybody's gotta have a nickname".

Some of us arrived with our own nicknames.  When I landed in Nashville I realized that no one knew my real name and just decided to use an obscure nickname that 3 or 4 of my high school friends occasionally called me.  Thus Joe Biller became Buck Biller.  Buck Paden told me at a reunion some years ago that he thought my real name was Frank Buckbiller.

The Classic "prepackaged" nickname was "My real name is Bill but my friends call me Lunchmeat.”

Matt showed us some of his old home movies from freshman year and beyond at reunion a few years ago and there was a guy in them called "The Tool.”  I cannot remember who Tool is?

So I thought it might be kind of fun to throw out some nicknames and see if everyone can remember the person's real name.  Here are some of my favorites as I remember them in class order (I can't remember them all so please add others I forgot):

You inspired another contest, Old Topper, thanks again for sending in this great piece.  I love and respect all of my ATO Brothers and Sisters.  So, without further “to-do” . . .

ANNOUNCING THE “TICK-A-LOR NICKNAMES” ESSAY CONTEST

Rules:

1.      Write a short essay, 300 words or less.

2.      The topic should be about anything to do with any NICKNAME from Vanderbilt, either one of the ATO “nicknames” listed above, or any other nickname not listed, yours included.  The nickname may be of an ATO, or ATO Social Affiliate, or ATO Gal-Pal, or Vanderbilt Professor, Vanderbilt Football Player, etc., or ATO side-kick.

3.   No profanity or politics.  The only exception is if the actual nickname itself is profane.  For example, a few years ago, Dr. Phibes sent me photos and an essay he wrote about a few of his New York friends who traveled to visit him for a weekend during Freshman Year, and he had brilliantly nicknamed one of his side-kicks “Dogshit.”  This essay is posted at "Beta Pi Blog, Vol.2008, No.05 - Abominable Dr. Phibes, Unplugged" (January, 2008).   The use of “Dogshit” was clearly an exception to our “no profanity” rule, as the story would have been worthless if we had censored the name.

4.      E-mail your essay to me, in e-mail or Word format - to lasimons4law@aol.com .

5.      Deadline for submissions is April 30, 2017.

6.      Awards:

First Prize Dinner on the Three Stooges at Rotier’s Restaurant - at the next Reunion (for you and your spouse/significant other, no limit to how much beer you can drink, spouse/significant other limited to one Long-neck).

Second Prize:  A nice set of Steak Knives.

Third Prize:  you’re fired!  (you have to watch “Glengarry, Glenross” to understand this joke).

7.      Judges:

Frank J. Biller, Lawrence A. Simons and Steven Blair Starr.  All decisions final.

8.      The three winning entries will be published in the next blog
