Over
the years, Ann and I have been to a few Music Festivals, but not one as big as
Woodstock. So, Ann had the idea for us
to go to Bonnaroo, and I agreed to escort her. We both love music.
For
those of you who don’t know what it is, Bonnaroo is Tennessee’s version of a “mini-Woodstock.” Bonnaroo is held on a 700 acre farm near
Manchester, Tennessee. It doesn’t draw
500,000 people like Woodstock did, but it draws a lot of people. This year, some 70,000 people attended. And we were among them.
Here is
our saga. Perhaps as you peruse the
photos, and see some of the costumes kids were wearing, it may remind you of
certain wild parties held by the Tick-a-lors during the Seventies, known to ATO's as “Ship
Wreck.” (as theme music from "Twilight Zone" plays . . .)
It was HOT. I should have gone “bare-chested” like the dude who photo-bombed this picture. Strike that, don't think I'm ready to be parading "man-boobs." We camped out, it was awesome. Behind me is where our tent was. I felt like Sgt. Vince Carter.
They
have this cheesy “Rainbow” thing, it is sort of a land mark for the place where
you exit the camping area, and enter the music festival.
There
were TONS of people, mostly young people, but also an amazing number of
Boomers. Some truly amazing
costumes. Check out FLAG-MAN, the dude
with the American Flag Cargo Shorts! And Dreadlock-Rainbow-Man beside him.
Ann got
us “V.I.P. Camping Tickets” – which meant we got a reserved camping spot, in
the VIP Camping area, which had a VIP Tent for cooling off. It also meant that at all of the Music Stages
we got to sit in the VIP Area, which was far less crowded than General
Admission, it meant there was room to spread a blanket and sit (major
benefit). Here I am chilling in the VIP
Tent!
The VIP
Tent also had several lounge cots that were very popular, and Live Video of
various shows. We saw DOPAPOD Thursday,
but got no photos. We saw Alabama Shakes
Friday, but got no photos.
Once
again, I encounter FLAG-MAN.
There
was an abundance of pretty girls, this one had the good grace to actually wear
a dress! As you will see, there were
many girls who opted to wear bikinis, and not just a few who paraded around
topless.
Many
dudes and gals carried Flags!
As
promised, here is a Bikini-Girl.
Not to
be out-done, there were many fast-on-their-feet topless dudes too.
It was
dusty, as you might imagine, on a 700 acre farm, improved by dirt roads, with
70,000 human-cattle trudging around.
Many folks used a bandana to filter out the dust.
Here is
the “THIS STAGE” – and trippy-pants-Batman.
Buck
and Vinny, you won’t believe who attended . . . none other than FUAD! Fully attired in Arab garb, in 100 degree
heat no less.
The
COFFEE BAR was a big hit, especially for MOHAWK-SKINNY and his side-kick
BIKINI-GIRL.
Capes
were popular. Here is CAPED-CRUSADER!
In lieu
of Flags, some folks carried TOTEMS.
Check out DOG-MAN brandishing his totem with a likeness of his dog!
Many of
the people simply dressed normally.
Check
out Girl with 3-ring totem.
Some
folks enjoyed being photographed. Check out
GRIZZLY ADAMS and BIKINI CHAMP!
Here we
are Friday at the GARY CLARK, JR. SHOW.
Man, can he ever play! We also
saw the BEN HARPER SHOW (no photos). He
plays a slide guitar with the guitar on his lap, and he plays the shit out of
it!
Yeah, we are having big fun.
On our
way back to the Camp Site, we met a crazy group of camper/partiers who dubbed
themselves “Church Boners” - what a
hoot!
Sunday Morning there was Gospel Music, awesome. I didn’t see any of the "Church Boners" there.
So,
they had the best air-conditioned Bathrooms.
I go in to use the urinal, and standing next to me is THE GRIM REAPER, I
kid you not, the dude had on a Black full length Cape with pointed hood. So I said to him, “I never thought I’d be here,
taking a leak next to THE GRIM REAPER, taking a piss. I hope this is not “my time.” And dude said “Even THE GRIM REAPER takes
vacations, you’re in the clear my dude!”
So naturally, when we got outside, I asked him if I could get a picture
made with him – great guy!
Yes, it
was hot, but we had so much fun.
Here we are at BELA FLECK and ABIGAIL WASHBURN. Awesome!
A big
time was had by all!
I told
you there were some WILD and CRAZY COSTUMES!
This gal at least covered up with paint.
We had several sitings of totally topless gals. Yes, it is an amazing new world. Did I mention we also smelled reefer . . .
.everywhere? Could there be a connection?
VIKING-MAN
was even there!
We had
such a good time, the music was great, the people were free, fun and fascinating, the camping
was a blast, the food was good - we plan to
return, maybe, next year.

Tom “Love-Man” Lovinggood really has his “juices” flowing. The man is OBSESSED with the Commodore Baseball Team, and we are blessed to have Tom as a Blog Sports Correspondent. Here is the latest (over the last few weeks) from Tom . . .
"Make
Some Noise!!!! - VANDY Men's Baseball is
returning to Omaha for the College World Series!!!!
"VU beat University of Illinois (who was ranked #6 in the country) in 2 games. They will now move on to face Cal State Fullerton on Sunday June 14th. The World Series is a double elimination type of tournament. I am not sure who Vandy will play after that. BTW--Dansby Swanson of the "Dores was selected #1 in the MLB draft last night. We also had two pitchers who were also selected in the first round--Carson Fulmer and Walker Buehler. All good news for Vanderbilt Baseball Program."
"There are 8 teams that have been selected for the World Series after winning their respective regional tournaments. They are: Arkansas, Virginia, LSU, TCU, Cal State Fullerton, Florida, Miami (Fla.) and Vanderbilt. The format is a double elimination tournament.”

KEEPING TABS:
Here is
a reminder of the Brothers we have lost.
In case you did not get the news.
If you
have never explored the “Archives” in this Blog – it is toward the top of the
latest “blog issue”, on the right. You
access it by clicking on the Month and Year, and it will drop down with
choices. For example, if you click on
December, 2006, it will drop down and list all issues that were published that
month. If you want Issue No. 68, you
click on that, and it takes you to that issue.
You can then post a comment to that issue. It’s never too late to post a comment,
right?
