BIG 6-0 FOR BUCKO & LORENZO

Buck invited me to his 60th Birthday Bash, and I was unable to attend.  He sent this picture . . .

The guest of honor and a mysterious visitor from the Northlands.

You know . . . it is just frickin’ amazing (disgusting) how fit and trim these two Stooges look, yes?  Buck & Vinnie, I love you guys!

For my own 60th Birthday Bash, Ann gave me a trip to the Big South Fork River & Recreation Area, for White Water Rafting, hiking and horseback riding.

Those who are unfamiliar with Big South Fork, it is a beautiful part of the Cumberland River in East Tennessee, about midway between Nashville and Knoxville.  It is not a National Park, but it is a part of the National Park System.

Ann flew my son Andrew home to join us, and my step-son William joined us as well.

WE HAD A FRICKIN’ BALL!  Here are some highlights.

WHITE WATER RAFTING TRIP

I love White Water Rafting, we have done it a few times.  So, we’re doing it in East Tennessee once again . . ., and I can’t help but think of the movie Deliverance.

It’s like, what if we capsize, wash up on shore and find ourselves face to face with . . .

LGBT Mountain-man?

Or the cross-eyed banjo child?

Do I look like a happy camper, or what?

William and Andrew

The family that rafts together . . . laughs together!

So we rafted right up to this really cool water fall . . .

William and Ann, with our Captain Bob, who managed to keep us from flipping over into the drink . . .

We took a breather at the “jumping rock” – where they let us swim . . .

Which is how we all got wet – voluntarily.  The water was great!

The rapids were “Class 3” and it was a ball!  Way too difficult to take pictures, but trust me it was big action.

Then, they picked us and we got a lovely boat ride . . .

Andrew was definitely chillin’

As was William!

HIKING IN BIG SOUTH FORK RIVER & RECREATION AREA

William, Lorenzo & Andrew . . .

William, Ann & Andrew . . .

Somewhere, down in there is the Big South Fork River . . .

It was great having Andrew join us . . .

This weird green thing was growing . . .

HORSE BACK RIDING

The boys had to leave, but Ann and I went for a horse ride

Ann and her horse wore a matching ensemble . . .

A good time was had, thanks to Ann for the awesome Birthday!

VANDERBILT FOOTBALL SCANDAL

A few weeks ago, Buck called saying he’d heard four Vandy Football players have been suspended for allegedly molesting a young woman.  We checked our sources, and that is a fact.   Rumor has it there was a video showing the four players carrying a rather drunk woman into a dorm room . . NOT GOOD.   Little else is known, except that everyone at Vanderbilt is closed-lipped pending a Police investigation.  The names of the players are not known.  Buck and I agreed, it is the right thing for Vanderbilt and Coach Franklin to take this swift action, regardless of the impact on the football program.

FROM GEORGE ABERNATHY:

"Larry:

Lance 'Bad Moon' Reising is still alive! Lance was asking about the picture of the Last Supper. Aber

TO ABER:

Yeah, I have Bad Moon on my radar -reisings@mindspring.com - I do not have that year book that contains the infamous Last Supper Picture. My earliest yearbook is 1972, and I suspect the sacreligious artifact appears in 1971, or even 1970, yes? Perhaps we can convince Boss Stein to either scan it,or loan it to me. It would be a spectacular feature on the blog as the Crusty Cree o' 73 prepare for their triumphant return! Be well, Larry

FROM BAD MOON REISING:

"Hey, Larry,

I was ’73, and I’m pretty sure it was my freshman year, ’70. It is a classic, Animal House-type stuff, huh?

( Plz note newer email address…,lance.reising@comcast.net)

Thanks, I enjoy the diversion the blog provides.

Lance"

TO BAD MOON: Thanks, hope to see you and the other Werewolves of 73 at Homecoming! Bozo

FROM CLAUDE CODY:

"I see that “Jesus” was ahead of the fashionistas with his boxers showing. I had forgotten how much Dennis Fite ( I think) resembled the central figure. What the picture isn’t showing is the effect that Clark Thomas put in, a beam of light shining down on “Jesus”.

TO HOWIE: Thanks Brother Howie for sending the infamous "ATO Last Supper" picture! I was getting desperate for a decent copy, since the copy Boss Stein sent me was . . . a bit blurry. I plan to feature this sacreligious art relic in the next Blog. I might call you, for more info on the back-story of how our Christian Fraternity decided to make such an artsy statement.

FROM CLAUDE CODY:

"It was almost banned from the yearbook. We explained that our fraternity was founded on Christian principles (remember you pledge training?) and we were celebrating that. Clark Thomas took the picture and for the yearbook added a special effect. He inserted a beam of light to shine on Jim Burgess’ head (the crucified Jesus). Clark May be able to provide a better picture.

FROM MARTY HEFLIN:

""Larry,

Thanks for your kind note the other day. I feel like this is back to the future for me - I started with Ron Terwilliger at Trammell Crow in 1988...here we go again!

Keep up the great work on the blog - loving the interplay. We got our yearbook picture censored a couple of times too - one was a dead presidents theme as I recall and then there was the picture with the hats...my memory may be mixing with lore though, can't be sure. Great times nonetheless.

Marty

TO MARTY: Yes, well . . . censorship at Vanderbilt has always been a way of life. It is surprising - or maybe more a reflection of the times - that the "Jesus Freaks of 1971" were able to pull that off. (But then, Clark Thomas once told me that he was "hired by Chancellor Heard" to wander the Campus and take pictures - so Clark was "well connected" - and I suspect when he produced the photo that in itself lent weight to it).

Of course, it is abundantly apparent from the picture that they not only considered themselves equivalent of the "Greek gods" - but had egos which equipped them to "walk on water" as well. As I look at the picture, I think "they look so young and innocent . . .WRONG, they were BAD as hell and proud of it! They were a beautiful thing to behold.

My year we did a swashbuckling pirate picture . . OH YEAH, WE WERE bad!. . . u n-huh, yeah, right.

FROM MATT BLANKENSHIP:

"Great birthday trip! You may need a bigger horse next time! lol

Take care,
Matt

TO MATT: Hey . . . my ass is no bigger than John Wayne's when he starred in True Grit. My horse had stunted growth syndrome, and he grumbled at me the entire trip. :-)

FROM GEORGE TOMLINSON:

"Hey, where’s the pic??

George Tomlinson aka “the Heme”

TO HEME: Yeah, I thought the same thing. After I speculated that John Stein might send it, he did, and so did Howie Vogel of all people. I mean, I don't know Howie personally, but I know him through his professional reputation, which is excellent, and if ever a guy had his nose welded to the grindstone . . .! (Howie and Doug Campbell both). But Heme, never fear, I Bozo will be featuring this sacreligious artifact in the next Blog, along with featured commentaries by those who were actually there(unlike myself, I did not begin at VU until "72 when those Holy Rollers were long gone). I think Vogel sent it out to everyone on the Blog list, so it is in your inbox. I look forward to hearing from you, and other ticks. Send your commentaries to my e-mail Lasimons4law@aol.com . Be well, looking forward to seeing you at Reunion! Larry
