Lads, being Blog-Miester has its privileges.  In today’s e-mail, I received a mystery e-mail from one of our Vandy Friends, whose name must remain secret, because there is a proposal for a new Contest.  Knowing how much the Blog loves a good contest, I simply must rush this to the presses.  When you see the e-mail message, and the accompanying photograph, you will understand.

SO, WITHOUT FURTHER TO-DO, BETA PI BLOG GIVES YOU . . .

THE WORLD’S BEST CONTEST:

Here is the mystery e-mail:

“Vandy thankfully racked up enough points to vanquish Harvard yesterday. Can anyone identity this rack? .... a couple of you guys out there might know who carries these bad boys around...

VANDY TOPS HARVARD 79-70 IN NCAA ACTION:

What an awesome performance by the Dores!  Vandy held the lead from late in the first period – and Harvard attempted a rally in the last several minutes of the game, but fell short.  We go on to face Wisconsin in the next round.  WAY TO GO VANDY!!  GO DORES!!

OUT OF NOWHERE . . . THAT ROD YANKER DISCIPLE

TOM SOUDAN  . . . EMERGES AS A THREAT TO FRANK BILLER AS THE MOST GIFTED TICK SPORTS WRITER.

A most excellent column erupted from the mind of Tom:

BETA PI BLOG PRESENTS THE DEBUT OF . . .

THE SOUDAN SPORTS SURGE

By Tom Soudan, VU Class of 81

All-Time-Great-Steve Keith needs no introduction to the T'ICS who lived during Rod Yanker's reign. Steve was unique. He could play Tails on a Friday night and run with Clay Heron (where are you brother?) on the cross country team on Saturday. He was a wide receiver on the intramural football team that got robbed in the championship game against the Sigma Chi dicks. He took catching a Frisbee to a new level. His hair was a little long but that was the late seventies. Recruited by fellow St. Louis native

Randy Martin, Steve passed through the Star Chamber in 1978.

Coaching stints at Emory, UTEP, Alabama and Georgia Tech finally lead him to his dream job at Vandy. He has coached a lot of All American runners. Check out his bio on line (http://www.vucommodores.com/sports/w-xc/mtt/keith_steve00.html).

Winning the SEC Championship this year brought him SEC Coach of the Year and NCAA Regional Coach of the Year honors. Because Steve is gainfully employed by Vanderbilt University, I wanted to mention that he was an outstanding student /citizen during his college career. Never veered from the hallowed path we were all walking. Quoting Brother Keith “Don’t ask me what it’s like to be out in the real world because I’ve never left campus!

Where are Brother Jim Keith, Steve Boyd, and Rip Hawk?

Coach Steve Keith and the VU Women’s Cross Country Team

Hat's off to Steve Keith who has parlayed a career to include hanging out with young, physically fit coeds.

SO . . . YESTERDAY  . . .

I get this e-mail from Tom LOVE-MAN Lovinggood, wondering why we are doing that thing Geezers do . . . dozing.

So, not being a sports-guy or sports-writer, I figured Buck is just the man.  Here is how it happened.  I get this from TOM, and I respond:

"Larry--

How come there has been no chatter over Vandy's victory over Kentucky last weekend? That has to be one of the greatest wins in the history of men's basketball at Vanderbilt??"

TO TOM: I heard about the game, awesome that VU beat the Wildcats. I was thinking of asking Frank Biller to write a sports ed about it, I'd be willing to bet he saw it.

Larry”

THEN, BOSS CHIMES IN:  “I too would love to read a Buck rendition. It was wonderful history and theater. Proud of the boys. J.stein”

AND NOW . . . THE BOSS HAVING ORDAINED IT, BETA PI BLOG IS PROUD TO GIVE YOU:

THE BUCKO SPORTS PAGE

By Frank J. Biller

Hi Guys,

A bunch of us posted on FB Sunday after the big win. I can't figure out how to cut and paste from there so I will try to recreate.

We are the Champions! VU beats UK 71-64 to take the first SEC Championship home to Nashville since we beat the 'Cats in 1951. Jeff Taylor, you magnificent bastard! Ironically, Vanderbilt (aka "The Harvard of the South” - mainly by VU grads) plays the real Harvard Crimson in the first round of the Big Dance.

But. Have unfinished business with UK as we will meet them again in the final four- but they know we can beat them now!

My dear friend Frank Collins reminded me that Harvard grads refer to their alma mater as "The Vanderbilt of the North.”

Betty Engle declared that there will be inner family rivalries at her house during the 'Dores / Crimson tilt.

I have already begun the trash talking with my kids as VU will meet their alma maters Wisconsin then Ohio State just to get out of the lower bracket in the east.

Jeff Glanz chimed in "wow man, Vinny is killing Buck.”  Oops, correction, that was another story.

Seriously folks, this is one of the best teams Vandy has had in our generation, rivaling the VBk, Terry Compton, Jeff Fosnes group and the Will Perdue squads. I never saw the 50's group with Clyde Lee or Bob Dudley Smith's crew. I am sure they were fun to watch. I am not ashamed to say that when I saw Coach Stallings crying into his towel after the game, I lost it myself and sobbed like a little girl for about 15 minutes.

There was more written, but that is all I can remember.

It was a great day for our community and a sign of greater days to come in all our athletic programs. Don't forget the Commodorettes or the golf and baseball squads, champions all. Next fall we will see the greatest recruiting class in football since Heme the Heme, Cheeks Reed, Aber and Hawkins Golden first donned the Black and Gold.

For once OUR hearts are lifted in sweet victory. Savor the sweet taste and relish in the notion that it will pass our way many times again, for WE are the Champions today my friends. And we will be again.

I love all my ATO Brothers and Sisters and all my Vandy Nation,

Buck Biller

LIBERTY BOWL TICK-A-LOR EXCURSION!:

So, yesterday VINNY STARR telephoned me, wondering why the Beta-Pi-Blog had been silent for a month.  No excuse, really.  I have been working on the cabin Ann and I built at our farm, and there has been much to write about on my “other blog which shall remain nameless” – because I vowed that Beta-Pi-Blog would and forever shall be non-political.

That said, here are some “LIBERTY BOWL MEMORIES.”

THE LIBERTY BOWL itself is frickin’HUGE.  What more can a English Major say?

YOUNG ANN had early on abandoned her plan to actually put on a tailgate, because of the “core group” we received last minute cancellations from FRANK BILLER (missed you Buck!) and

CLAUDE CODY (your presence was missed old friend!).

And, I got a last minute e-mail from BOSS STEIN that he and his wife were also rendezvousing with another couple, but that he’d see us there.

So, Ann and I went to Official VANDY TAILGATE – the crowd was big, food was good, cheerleaders had boundless pep.  I tried texting the Boss at that point, but the crowd was so huge.

Ann and I also saw some of her Vandy friends – whose daughter Margaret is roommates with Ann’s daughter Maggie (who is a HUGE VANDY FAN) - who invited us to join their TAILGATE.  Great food and bev.

Then, like lemmings we all filed into the Stadium.

On the RAMP up, I sighted ATO Oldster and ALL-TIME-GREAT Vandy Basketball Star BOB DUDLEY SMITH.  I went up to Bob Dudley – shook his hand.  I had once served on the Alumni Association with Bob Dudley, and had shaken his hand a hundred times, but alas he looked at me like he had never seen me before.  In fairness to him, he must be in his 80’s.

KICK OFF!

Our Cheerleaders did AMAZING FEATS, our COMMODORES FOUGHT, AND THEY FOUGHT WELL!

During the game, there was a J.D. STRICKLAND SIGHTING!

BUCK BILLER and

FRANK COLLINS texted me during the game!  FUN!!

VANDY had the lead going into the fourth quarter, and fought hard, but Cincinnati pulled ahead.

At that moment, I had a BOSS STEIN SIGHTING.  Boss was visibly pissed that the DORES were being bested.

The Vandy crowd was the biggest I have ever seen, which is why I could not connect with J.D. STRICKLAND or BOSS STEIN.

Well, I came away from the game feeling very proud of the Dores.  Season ticks have just gone on pre-sale – and Ann is very excited.  I am too, looking forward to a great Season!
